Born in Bengal, Mazumdar studied at the Government School of Am and Crafts, Calcutta, where he mastered the Western Academic style of painting. This style was adapted to a predominantly Indian subject matter, especially female portraits, although he was also an accomplished landscape painter as the present example bears witness. Mazumdar's work may be seen in various public collections and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi has some fine examples.
