RABINRANATH TAGORE

Bengal, India

Born into a wealthy landowning family of Bengal, Rabindranath was the 14th child. He is better known for his literary achievements (for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1914) and he came to painting relatively late in his career. He held his first exhibition in 1930 at the Galerie Pigalle in Paris and subsequently his works continued to be exhibited both at home and abroad. He tended to favour ink or watercolor as a medium and his reputation as an artist has continued to grow even after his death in 1941. Most recently his works were included in an exhibition held at the Barbican Gallery, London (1986).
